The most difficult challenges in supporting gifted children come from the disparity between intellectual development and emotional development. That disparity causes social, psychological and behavioral problems which in turn can affect a child's self-image and general approach to the world. Hypersensitivity and hyperintensity magnify personality differences. Whether you are a parent, an educator or a health professional, working with gifted children requires much more thought and patience than average. Parents and professionals often need help to gain perspective. Understanding the dilemma caused by asynchronous development provides a framework which allows parents and professionals to better understand and cope with the challenges of supporting gifted children.
Dr. Goerss received her Bachelor of Science from University of Portland, her MD degree from Loyola-Stritch School of Medicine and her MPH in epidemiology (the study of disease in populations) from University of Minnesota. She completed pediatric training and a genetics fellowship at Mayo Clinic. She has 2 gifted sons. She has been studying giftedness for over 13 years. She is currently serving on the Professional Advisory Committee for SENG.
