"This Isn't the Child I Dreamed of Raising":
Understanding, Coping with, and Helping Your Gifted-but-Challenging Child
Are you tired of all the tension? Strategies that seem to work for a while - but then don't? Desperate attempts to second-guess what might happen next? Are you working hard just to keep afloat with a child whose intensity, sensitivity, inflexibility, or volatility is frustrating (and exhausting) everyone?
It's time to stop, step back, and focus on understanding your child's essential nature - the core, salient features that lie behind his or her challenging behavior - so you can develop practical, proactive, and positive strategies tailored to your specific child. General guidelines are fine, but they're not enough! You need something more - a clear and user-friendly framework to help you cope, foresee, and plan intelligently, not just endure (fingers crossed) from one crisis to another.
This webinar will show you how to do that. We'll explore the core traits and unmet or misunderstood needs - for example, an intense need for order, novelty, space, autonomy, exactness, or enactment of one's vision - that give rise to specific kinds of provocative, confusing, demanding, and "difficult" behavior. Then we'll look at practical ways to work with each of these traits - not by getting rid of them, but by engaging them as allies and the seeds of your child's happiness and fulfillment. Rather than trying to figure out what label or "problem" your child has, you'll learn how to understand who he or she is. The webinar will show you how to deconstruct common emotional and behavioral challenges of gifted children - how to map your unique child and find strategies that empower all of you.
Barbara Probst, MSW, LCSW, is the author of the groundbreaking book "When the Labels Don?t Fit" a fresh, comprehensive, and practical approach to raising bright children who are intense, inflexible, sensitive, provocative, eccentric, confusing and hard to manage because they're hard to understand. She has given dozens of presentations to parent and professional organizations throughout the country and has been interviewed on numerous TV and radio programs. Currently completing her PhD, Barbara also teaches masters level social work students and provides consultations for families struggling to cope with a challenging child.
